BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB: Performs in a training pharmacist role and provides chemotherapy and IV room technician support under the direct and continuous supervision of a pharmacist.

Minimum Work Experience: Must be currently enrolled in a local ACPE Accredited College of Pharmacy. Previous East Tennessee Children’s Hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred

General computer skills.
Strong math skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- All under the direct supervision of a pharmacist who is beyond his or her probationary period:
- Trains to supervise pharmacy technicians. Gains proficiency in math calculations.
- Prepares accurate labels utilizing the proper labeling format. Any remaining labels are destroyed upon completion of packaging medications.
- Assesses and processes physician medication orders: Age appropriate criteria (i.e. dose), Appropriate route, duplication. Allergies, interactions, etc., Computer usage, Prioritizes stat or now orders.
- Maintains accurate records of: Computerized patient profiles, Controlled substances,IV Compounder, Electronic cabinet, Pharmacy computer, Unit dose log, Other as indicated
- Ensures equipment operation and maintenance of: IV Hoods, IV Computer, Electronic cabinet (omnicell), electronic Scale, printers and Computers
- Maintains medication stock, including: IV fluids, Solid, liquid dosage forms, Electronic cabinet or floor stock, Orders medications/supplies appropriately, Stores medications/supplies appropriately, Nursing unit inspections, Crash carts and boxes, Outdated medications
- Clinical Pharmacy Assessment (lab data, electrolytes, kinetics, etc.)
- Performs and supervises all general and chemo technician competencies and duties
- Prepares/selects age appropriate medication for compounding, filling, and dispensing
- Fills patient medication envelopes with the correct medication from computer labels: Medications are delivered to the proper nursing units, ancillary departments, and pharmacy satellites. Takes appropriate steps (such as double checking and checking against a copy of the physician’s order) to prevent dispensing errors.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner as observed by coordinator and peers. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times

- Resolves questions with the Pharmacist, Nursing service, and/or Physician
- Answers the phone promptly and appropriately. Promotes and maintains professional relationships with other departments
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra- departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner as measured by management observation and peer input.

- Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.

Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
